Safety

The Cosatech Group of Companies is committed to an extensive Health and Safety Program that is reflected in our outstanding safety record established over more than seven decades.

Cosatech Construction's corporate policy establishes clear lines of responsibility for safety, from general managers to front-line supervisors. Our specific programs range from identified job training requirements to mandatory attendance for ACSA Safety Training.

Cosatech Construction's dedicated Safety Team consists of seven Safety Officers, with educations ranging from Emergency Medical Technicians and Emergency Responders to Licensed Registered Nurses and CSO's/ NCSO's. Cosatech Management has been part of the Certificate of Recognition Programs through ACSA since entering the program in 1994.

Management proudly operates a Safety Awards Incentive Program that allows workers to be rewarded for their safety record based on their performances at all Cosatech Construction sites.

On a monthly and quarterly basis, a Health or Safety related topic is distributed for review in our company newsletter. As well, Cosatech Construction promotes a "Run For Your Life" program that rewards employees for achieving goals in personal fitness and activities.

 

Orientation:

New hires and employees new to the site require orientations.

Hazard Analysis:

The Project Manager and Superintendent will arrange a hazard analysis identifying any potential critical activities and a means to control the exposures.

Emergency Plan and Procedure:

CANS's team will review the client's emergency plans and incorporate/communicate them to the on site organization. We will review and communicate the procedures with all employees during safety meetings including posting information in all frequented areas.

Subcontractors:
  • The entire site operates under one unified safety program.
  • Subcontractors and their employees fall under the Company's Safety Program.
  • Subcontractors and their employees receive orientation.
  • Subcontractor employees participate in site training meetings and inspections.
Safety Meetings:
  • Daily Toolbox Talks - Prior to any work, hazards are identified and a means of control is communicated to specific workers engaged in that activity. If the scope changes the toolbox talk is initiated again. Any hazards that are identified items will be communicated to the Superintendent and monitored for completion.
  • Weekly Safety (by firm) - Attendance is mandatory.
  • Weekly Sub-Contractor - The Site Safety Coordinator attends meetings to ensure that any vital information is communicated.
Inspections:
  • Continuous - Performed by Site Safety Coordinator / Supervision / Management any time a walk-about is performed.
  • Weekly - Formal, performed utilizing hourly employees on a rotating basis.
  • Monthly - Performed by Safety Health and Environmental Manager and reported directly to upper management.
Investigations:
  • Performed on all medical aids and lost-time injuries, including any serious near misses.
  • Near Miss Reporting: Serious incidents are communicated to all site employees via a Safety Alert and reviewed.
  • Behaviour Observation: Behaviour-based safety program utilizing an observation technique.
  • Client Requirement: Any special needs of the client will be reviewed, developed and incorporated into the safety Policies and Procedures.
Records:
  • Injury: All injuries are recorded and tracked. This data is further evaluated and appropriate controls are implemented if a pattern is identified. Data is provided to the client for their tracking systems. All sub-trades are logged and tracked for compliance with the procedures.
  • Evacuation: All data recorded is evaluated for patterns or hazards. Appropriate data is reviewed by management for feedback and further actions.
  • Near Miss (behaviour observation): Observation cards are reviewed and addressed when submitted and entered in a data base for future analysis.
